This post is a part of our packing tips round up that we’ve put together including the following posts: Essential Cruise Packing Tips, Must Have Items for Travel to Europe, and Ultimate Things to Pack for a Beach Resort.

Since November 2023, we have been using the Biaggi carry cube backpacks on all trips and the Biaggi Runway 22” Carry-on on most trips.

NOTE >> We talk a little bit about the Biaggi Carry Cube backpacks in the Quality Carry-On Luggage section of our Essential Cruise Packing Tips post and also have a very extensive review of the backpacks in our Biaggi Carry Cube Backpack Review : Worth the Hype? post so make sure to get that information.

Two carry-on sized suitcases are photographed on a light oak hardwood floor.
The LUGGEX 22” Carry-On Suitcase and Biaggi Runway 22” Carry-On sitting next to each other for size comparison. They are essentially the same height and width. Although it appears to be smaller, once expanded, the Biaggi Runway 22” Carry-On has slightly more depth than the LUGGEX carry-on.

We thought it was time to post a review of these items, as well as the Luggex carry-on suitcase, to let you know how they are holding up since we are coming up on the 2 year mark of pretty heavy use given how much we travel. We bought the backpacks and carry-on suitcases ourselves and these are our honest opinions. We have not received any compensation to say any of this about either brand.

This post is to give YOU the information so you can make good decisions for your own needs.

Biaggi Runway Carry-On

For carry-on suitcases, Angie is currently using the Biaggi Runway 22 inch. The suitcase is 22” x 14” x 8”, including the wheels and comfortable leather lifting handle, and expands to 22” x 14” x 10.5”. It weighs 5.9 lbs which is lighter than the majority of hard-sided carry-ons. It has a polycarbonate shell which is about as tough as a suitcase gets for a hard-sided case without a major step up in price to get an aluminum case.

The Biaggi Runway 22” Carry On suitcase is pictured lying on its back with the clamshell opening zipped open with the lid up so we can see inside the suitcase.
The Biaggi Runway 22” Carry On Suitcase features a hard-sided polycarbonate shell and has clamshell opening which makes it ideal for opening in small spaces.

We love that the Biaggi Runway has a clamshell opening. It makes it very nice for a small hotel room with limited counter space since it takes up about half the space of a normal hard-sided suitcase when opened.

The Biaggi Runway carry-on has also performed well. The wheels show minimal wear after nearly 2 years of use and all 4 wheel sets  continue to spin fluidly and work as well as they did when they were brand new. The Biaggi Runway has a few minor scuffs on the exterior now but nothing that affects the performance of the suitcase at all.

This wouldn’t change Angie’s mind about ordering her Biaggi luggage, but one strange item to note was that this suitcase was marked ‘purple’ on the website when ordering. She ordered the purple suitcase and backpack hoping to have a matching set in her favorite color. The backpack was purple, but you can see the suitcase is what we would call navy blue.

The Biaggi Runway 22” Carry On suitcase and the LUGGEX are pictured back to back against each other with the pull handles extended.
The pull handles extended are the same height on both the LUGGEX and Biaggi Runway at 41 inches.

There’s a NEW version of the Biaggi carry-on which may be even more versatile. Because it is so new, we haven’t purchased this new, smaller Biaggi carry-on yet.

The Latest Greatest Biaggi Carry-On – The Biaggi Runway Hybrid

Biaggi now makes a slightly smaller version of the Biaggi Runway 22” carry-on called the Biaggi Runway Hybrid. This is an expandable, under-the-seat carry-on so if you can give up another 6 inches of packing space this carry-on gives you options. With airlines continuing to charge more for every little thing, more and more people are moving to carry-on luggage to save on cost. This makes overhead bin space on an airplane tough to come by at times.

The Biaggi Runway Hybrid comes to the rescue when there is no more overhead bin space because it’s designed to fit under the seat in front of you on the airplane.. It has dimensions of 16” x 12.5” x 8” including the wheels and handle and expands to 16” x 12.5” x 10”. It weighs 5.4 lbs. The pull handle extends to 37 inches, so the handle is a little shorter than the suitcases we’ve mentioned so far, but still a height that will be comfortable to walk with.

The Biaggi Runway Hybrid also currently counts as your allowed personal item on many discount airlines such as Frontier and Spirit which have strict size requirements. European airlines such as EasyJet are also strict about size which makes a smaller carry-on a good option if you can do it. Always check with your airline well ahead of your flight about allowed bag sizes so that you are not surprised at the airport with hefty fees.

Biaggi Runway Hybrid Expandable Under Seat Carry On – Fits Under the Seat on an Airplane

When overhead bin space is at a premium this Biaggi Runway Hybrid suitcase comes to the rescue! With the svelte dimensions of just 16” x 12.5” x 8” including the wheels and handle, this suitcase is designed to fit under the seat in an airplane.

Biaggi makes really nice luggage. We are confident it will last and think whichever Biaggi model you pick will perform well for you.

Luggex Brand Carry-Ons – Bring the Value

The Biaggi carry-ons are premium and they can be more money than some may want to spend. Jeff did his research and found the Luggex brand of carry-on suitcases to be very good and cost is about 40 percent less than what you’ll spend for a Biaggi carry-on. To be fair, the Luggex shell is thinner than the Biaggi and in a forceful drop test we think the Biaggi suitcase would fare better. (No one gave us our suitcases for free though, we paid full price, so we’re not going to drop test our suitcases on purpose.) Jeff ordered 4 different suitcases from Amazon to test and the Luggex was the clear winner. The zippers on the Luggex move really well and the Luggex had features that the other suitcases just didn’t have.

Luggex has upgraded some of its current offerings to include aluminum plates on all 8 corners on the case which provides a major upgrade in protection and brings even more value to the Luggex brand. The dimensions of the upgraded Luggex carry-on with the aluminum corners in the link above is 22” x 14.2” x 9.4” including the wheels and expands to 22” x 14.2” x 10.4”. It weighs 7.1 pounds.

Jeff’s current LUGGEX Carry-On Suitcase – Dimensions including the wheels: 22” x 13” x 9”. Expands to 22” x 13” x 10.5”.
The LUGGEX 22” Carry On suitcase is photographed open on a light oak hardwood floor The zippered covers on both sides are pulled back so we can see inside the suitcase.
A very nice feature with many of the Luggex carry-on suitcases is the zippered mesh closure on BOTH sides of the suitcase. (The mesh is rolled back in the photo so you can see the rest of the liner.) Many suitcases only have the tie-down strap for the 2nd side.

If you’re forced to gate check your bag often, you may want to just pony up the extra money and just get the Biaggi Runway 22 inch from the get go since it’s tougher. So far, our carry-ons have escaped the punishment of being thrown into the cargo hold of an airplane and also have avoided any trips through a baggage claim system. Luggage definitely lasts longer and takes far less abuse if you can avoid checking it.

Both the Biaggi and Luggex carry-on suitcases we own are still both going strong after constant use for nearly 2 years. We’ve had very good luck with both of these brands and the Biaggi Carry Cube Backpacks are also amazing and we highly recommend them. Happy traveling!
