Cheese Curd Donuts on a Random Weekday-Yes, Please! Our visit to Holy Donuts Eau Claire

That Facebook advertising gets me sometimes and I saw this ad one day recently.
The ad read, “We have leftover curd from the Cheese Curd Festival this weekend, so we are bringing the flavors to Eau Claire…” with date/time/location details and a picture of Ellsworth cheese curds and a paper boat of deliciousness.
Cheese Curds
Before I continue, I should probably explain a cheese curd, for the readers who are not Wisconsinites. Cheese curds are well known to Wisconsinites as sacred and delicious.
Basically, cheese curds are baby cheese. As fresh as it gets. If you eat cheese curds fresh, you know they are good when they squeak in your teeth.
PRO TIP: If your cheese curds stop squeaking, put them in the microwave for about 5-10 seconds to get the fresh taste and squeak back.

The Facebook event details stating it was our last chance to try Cheese Curd Mini Donuts with a list of flavors including Strawberry Cheesecake and The Breakfast Donut with the same picture from the advertisement.

When we arrived the day of the event to beautiful Phoenix Park in Eau Claire ready for our unique cheese curds treat, we quickly found the Holy Donuts truck parked in the typical spot when it visits, selling their non-cheese curd mini donut treats on other summer days.
Holy Donuts truck and line of customers gathered.
As we looked at the menu I realized these were going to be mini donuts with toppings that included cheese curd pieces and not cheese curds with donut toppings. I still maintain the advertisement sounded like they could have been cheese curds with donut toppings though.
We have had Holy Donuts mini donuts in the past and they are still worth a midday break in the middle of the week. We enjoyed a mixed order, but doubled up on the Strawberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Cheesecake, and Breakfast varieties so we wouldn’t have to share those. We got two to share, a Glaze N Sprinkles and Butterfinger Bomb to round out our order of 8.

They were still delicious, even if they weren’t the cheese curds we were hoping for. (Would someone get on that unique cheese curds idea, by the way?) We also took a few moments to walk around the lovely Phoenix Park and enjoy a couple of the sculptures from the Nation’s Largest Sculpture Tour right here in our town!

For us, sometimes thrifty living includes a little splurge from a local food truck in the middle of an average weekday to keep us entertained and willing to eat at home for most of the other meals that week. And, we always try to live like we’re traveling, even in our own backyard!
